A school badge will be awarded to any pupil in Years 5-8 who achieves 17 points over the five key areas. These key areas are Academic, Sport, Cultural, Attitude & Values and Service. At least 2 points is required in each category; the remaining points in any area. On the attaining of 17 points a school badge will be awarded by the principal at the end of the term.
Service:
Nominations from staff are considered for a service point. Students who are consistently reliable and trustworthy in duties they have undertaken. ie monitors. These points will be decided at the end of every term.
Academic:
These are awarded at the end of every term for up to 1/5th of the class for academic achievement and/or effort. A point may also be awarded for merit, distinction or high distinction in external academic exams ie. Otago Problem Solving, NSW
Sport:
These are awarded at the end of every season for up to 1/5th of the team for excellence, outstanding effort and commitment throughout the season. A point may be also awarded for representative honours in sports teams ie. Kainui, Manawatu
Cultural:
Cultural points may be awarded for high performance in music, a top 3 placing in speech competitions, for excellence in Choir or Production performances. A point may also may be awarded for outstanding art work.
Attitude & Values:
A point is awarded every time a certificate is awarded for a positive Attitude & Value in assembly for children in Years 5-8.
Although every child sets a goal for achieving the school badge, the acknowledgement of every single point is an important factor and therefore announced at each end of term assembly.
Principal’s discretion.
In the event of a Year 8 finishing their education at Whakarongo, the principal may grant discretion point in the event that a student is on 14 points or has significant points over 14 in 4 areas.
