· Our behaviour plan has been discussed and developed by the young people and teachers in Year 7/8—Room 17 2010. It is a record of how we behave towards others and wish others to behave towards us.
· It applies to all people who come into our class and will be used until the end of the school year in December 2010.
· There will be the opportunity to evaluate and improve this behaviour plan by the children and the teacher during the year.
· Any new young people or adults entering our classroom will be taken through the plan by a class member, who will at that stage answer any questions and explain the rights, responsibilities and rules in more detail.
· Our written class rules are displayed in the class to help us remember our commitment to each other.
Rights
· A right is something we believe is true and right and valuable about the way we should behave towards each other.
· In our class we believe that we should all have the right to be treated well. We believe we should all put effort into treating people as we would like to be treated. That is with respect, consideration and as individuals.
· Young people have the right to be treated with consideration while they work, play and learn in our safe school environment.
· Teachers have the right to work in an honest, friendly and kind environment with appreciation and support from parents, students and the community.
· Parents have the right to know that their child/children will be spending the day in a safe, respectful, positive learning environment. Our behaviour plan is an important way to remind, and help is to support these RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILTIES.
Responsibilities - (with rights come responsibilities)
In our class we each have a responsibility to care for ourselves and other people and to treat other people and their belongings with respect.
When we respect others we are thinking about how our behaviour affects them. This includes manners, courtesy and thoughtfulness.
WE DEMONSTRATE OUR RESPONSIBILITIES WHEN WE:
· CO-OPERATE—WORK TOGETHER SHARING IDEAS
· ARE ON TIME FOR CLASSES—(If we are late, give apology and explanation)
· ARE PREPARED TO WORK, PLAY & LEARN
· TRY OUR HARDEST IN ALL AREAS
· TALK TO OTHERS RESPECTFULLY
· LISTEN TO OTHERS WHEN THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE SPEAKING
· TREAT PEOPLE NICELY, HOW YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED
· HELP OTHERS IF THEY WANT YOUR HELP OR SUGGEST AN ALTERNATIVE
· REMEMBER SAFETY 1ST
· SPEAK OUT WHEN APPROPRIATE—(HAND FIRST)
· USE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE
· RESPECT PEOPLE WHO ARE WORKING
Our behaviour plan is an important way to remind, and help is to support these RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILTIES.
Rules We Follow
· To help protect our rights and to encourage responsibility we have rules for our class and for times when we are out of the class.
· These rules are fair and help everyone here to have a fair-go. We have discussed these rules and refer to them whenever necessary.
OUR TREATMENT RULE
· We are courteous to other people. (Greet students and adults, especially visitors)
· We use manners and are considerate to one another.
(eg. Please, Thank-you, Holding Doors, Raising Hand, Say “Excuse Me”, “Pardon”)
· We work in ways that ensure people feel as happy as possible and comfortable around us.
· We integrate to show that we are equal and can usually work together with anyone from our school.
OUR COMMUNICATION RULE
· We put our hands up for questions and during whole class discussions.
· We use our “partner-voices” or non-verbal communication when we are working.
· We use positive language with other people. This means no put-downs, teasing, cheap-shots, swearing or threatening others.
· We use active listening for talking to our classmates and teacher in class discussion times.
· We listen to others, and have thoughtful reasons for our actions.
OUR LEARNING RULE
· We organise our own and our groups equipment and resources.
· We use the co-operative learning skills we continue to learn.
· We are supportive to other people in their learning.
· When we want teacher assistance we use our hands up and wait rule. Before this we should have checked with help around us first. (3 Before Me!)
OUR PROBLEM SOLVING RULE
· We settle problems and disputes peacefully.
· We discuss difficult problems with our teacher and together with our classmates. (In classroom meetings if necessary).
· We talk about problems rather than keeping them inside ourselves. If we need help we ask for assistance.
· There is always the opportunity to have our say later and to work with the teacher to put things right (this is discussed later in our behaviour plan).
OUR MOVEMENT RULE
· We always walk in the classroom and around the school (on hard surfaces).
· We come into a room quietly and sensibly and we leave in small groups, allowing others to go before us where appropriate.
· We give people their own space when it is appropriate. (eg When there is work to be done, we encourage them to complete it).
· We move around the room only for sensible reasons (usually relating to the work we are doing).
OUR SAFETY RULE
· We take responsibility for our actions while at school.
· We use equipment appropriately and safely. We look after our property and the property of others.
· We only wear sensible clothing to school that relates to our learning for the day.
· We think about any possessions we bring into school and check that they are safe and appropriate.
· Any form of bullying is totally unacceptable in our classroom and school. We want to make people feel welcome and an important part of our learning community, not exclude them.
Consequences
· To help our class become responsible for their behaviour there are consequences which follow when our rules are broken.
· These consequences are related to the problem behaviour, and respect the individual.
· If anyone in our class makes it difficult for others to learn, or feel safe then they:
· Will be reminded of the class rule
· May be asked to stay back and discuss their behaviour with the teacher and fill out a Behaviour Think Sheet. (or a fellow student where necessary).
· May be removed from the classroom (for a brief time) to take “time out” to think about their behaviour
· After a 2nd reminder will be asked to write out the Tararua Code of Conduct and the rule they have broken and need to remember
· After a 3rd reminder will be asked to write out Tararua Code of Conduct and the rule they have broken and need to remember, mentioning possible strategies to avoid repeating.
· Parents may be contacted to discuss their children’s behaviour with their teacher (students may be needed as part of this discussion depending on the need).
Here are just some examples of planned consequences in our class:
· If I call out I understand that my Mr Lloyd may ignore me until I find a sensible and agreed strategy to gain his attention. I should expect to be reminded of our classroom rule.
· If I disrupt the learning of others I may be asked to sit and work away from others or even be removed from the classroom for a short period of time to think about my behaviour. I may then have to complete a Behaviour Think Sheet.
· If I am involved in bullying others I will be asked to explain my behaviour, which may involve a conference with the person/persons involved. I should expect this to be recorded in accordance with the school’s bullying policy.
· If my class work is not up to the standard expected from Mr Lloyd I will discuss it with him and maybe be asked to read it through and draft or edit it again. I may be asked to stay in at times to complete it. Mr Lloyd will always assist me with any aspect of my class work as much as possible.
My behaviour is my responsibility and I will always have a chance to explain and discuss my behaviour with my teacher.
